The Czech Republic (novinky.cz, Artalk): Julien van Middendorp’s “Living Color” Exhibition on View in Prague

2019-10 The “Living Color” exhibition by Dutch artist Julien van Middendorp is on view at Prague’s BB Centrum through November 3. In his work, he employs abstraction and draws inspiration from the De Stijl and Cobra art movements. In the exhibition titled “Living Color,” the painter presents a total of six paintings—three pairs interconnected by vibrant colors. In his works, Julien van Middendorp works with primary colors in carefully thought-out compositions.

Julien focuses on abstraction. His oil paintings captivate viewers with their composition and vibrant colors. “I find inspiration for my work on the streets. I’ve been living in Prague for four years now, and the local cultural environment is a fresh source of inspiration for me,” said Julien van Middendorp. He is planning another exhibition early next year in Bratislava, Slovakia. His paintings draw on the Dutch art movement De Stijl, founded in 1917 by prominent painters such as Piet Mondrian, Vilmos Huszár, and Theo van Doesburg. Julien’s style is also influenced by the world-renowned “Cobra” art movement (1948–1951), which included artists such as Karel Appel, Pierre Alechinsky, and Asger Jorn.
